The Coatigan – A/W 17/18 Category Update

Belted & Wrapped

The simple edge-to-edge belted cardigan has broad commercial appeal, working well as a casual transseasonal cover-up. This style evolves from the textured wide-collar looks of last season into a more refined option. A minimalist yet voluminous look characterises this item with clean rib finishing and a slouchy silhouette. Long extended sleeves, dropped shoulders and large pockets are key, echoing the trend for comfortable lounge looks in soft alpaca, mohair and wool blends.

Long-line

The long-line cardigan continues to have longevity as a core item. It's seen in the cosy yarns important to the season. A wider silhouette and casual dress coat style offer newness and work with the ongoing trend for layering. While pared-back simplicity is still important, subtle homespun decoration is added through soft stripes and fringing. Tactile yarns are key to both looks for an autumnal feel in brushed marl and mélange yarns in alpaca, cashmere, merino and lambswool.

Boxy & Cropped

A boxier silhouette offers newness to the coatigan this season when worked in textured and plain jersey knit. Loose, fluid volume works well for classic looks and has wide commercial appeal with subtle cuff detailing for edge-to-edge styles. For mid- to heavy-gauge looks, a blunt jacket feel is key. Texture accentuates the volume through the sleeves or collar in ribs, garter stitches and cable stitching. This item also works well for transseasonal collections in cotton, cashmere, merino and wool blends.

Cocooning Edge-to-Edge

A core perennial item, the edge-to-edge cardigan is updated with a cocooning full silhouette, soft textures and autumnal stripes. A more rounded and egg-shaped look has a luxurious contemporary feel working for the mid-level and premium market. Simplicity and tactile yarns are key for a cosy winter look in luxurious cashmere, mohair and alpaca blends in feather, fur-effect yarn and brushed yarns.

Enveloping Texture

Statement looks in enveloping, wrapped and cocooning styles have a sumptous feel for dramatic heavy-gauge looks. Crossover wrapping, giant shawl collars and matching scarves accentuate the sense of extreme tactility and warmth. This is an ideal vehicle for oversize pattern and texture. Lofty yarns with fringing, loop stitching, basket weaves and cable stitches appear in chunky salt-and-pepper marls, space-dye and marl yarns.

Lapel Collar

Turned-back, notched and lapel collars offer an alternative to the casual textured styles prevalent this season. Relaxed volume continues to be key, however, with wide lapels on edge-to-edge styles replacing more tailored looks. Contrast colour tipping and double-faced knit are worked in a neutral palette of grey, black, burgundy and olive for a classic functional feel. Short kimono sleeves seen across many coatigan styles work for a transseasonal feel in luxury cashmere, merino and wool blends.

Sportif Style

Alongside the voluminous looks key to this season, the sportif coatigan works for a directional and contemporary update. Button-through and zipped styles have a streamlined feel highlighted with a refined flat collarless or placket neckline. Smooth viscose and synthetic yarns are given subtle dimension through ripple or rib stitch in 14-12gg looks for a smartened-up feel, while abstract jacquard pattern has a younger feel. Collegiate styles are also important for the younger market with shawl collar, classic stripe and large badge detailing.

Oversized Hoodie

The hoodie is a relaxed piece that works well for the young casual market. It has oversize proportions and a slouchy look with a wide silhouette. Short kimono sleeves work well for layered lounge styles, stopping at mid-thigh in edge-to-edge and button-through styles. Pale grey, ecru and taupe keep the look neutral and luxurious. Simple rib and garter stitches _create a cosy feel in wool, merino and cashmere blends.

Slouchy V-Neck

The classic V-neck cardigan has exaggerated oversize proportions and a fresh contemporary feel, moving away from the rustic looks of the previous season. A slouchy shape is key, characterised through a rounded, cocooning silhouette. Deep rib cuffs accentuate the look with a wide relaxed shape through the body. Detailing is kept to a minimum with soft brushed and milled yarns in wool, mohair and alpaca blends.
